36-mal wurde der "Lake Kawaguchiko Marathon" – in Sichtweite des Fujiyama – Japans berühmtesten Berg und "Nationalheiligtum" – schon durchgeführt. Jetzt wurde der Lauf in “Mount Fuji Marathon” umgenannt.

3.776,24 m hoch ist der "Fuji", ein Vulkan – und immer auf dem Gipfel mit einer Schneedecke bekrönt. Wenn man das Glück hat ihn in seiner vollen Schönheit zu sehen, dann ist das ein beeindruckendes Naturschaupiel – nicht umsonst ist deswegen der Berg das wichtigste Touristenziel aller Japaner.

Zu seinem Füßen wird seit 36 Jahren der "Kawaguchigo-Marathon" durchgeführt, bisher immer mit einer der größten Sportzeitungen Japans – "Nikkans Sport" – zusammen. Von Tokyo fährt man ca. 2 Stunden mit dem Bus zum Kawaguchiko See, diesen See müssen die Läufer beim Marathon auch zweimal umrunden.

Seit 1990 hat der Berlin-Marathon eine Kooperation mit diesem Marathon, der sich Partner aus aller Welt suchte, wie Kanada, Australien, USA (Las Vegas Marathon), Hong Kong und Neuseeland. Der Berlin-Marathon besucht seit 1990 diese Veranstaltung mit Offiziellen und Läufern, umgekehrt startet der Sieger des Kawaguchiko-Marathon dann als Belohnung in Berlin.

Die Gastfreundschaft der japanischen Veranstalter ist legendär, insbesondere die Nachfeiern, wenn die Delegationen vom Bürgermeister des Ortes Kawaguchiko zur Abschlußfeier eingeladen werden – und der Sake die Zungen löst.

Die Umbenennung in "Mount Fuji Marathon" läuft parallel zu der Öffnung der bisherigen Eliteläufe wie in Tokyo und Osaka in Läufe für die laufende Bevölkerung, das ist eine Umkehrung der bisherigen Praxis.

In Japan zu laufen ist schon ein Erlebnis besonderer Art. Der Lauf wurde bisher immer mit einem Höhenfeuerwerk gestartet, es kam auch schon vor, daß am Start noch Schnee lag. Aber die Sonne machte dann schnell aus dem Schnee den Garaus.

Der Lauf hat jetzt auch eine vollständige Ausschreibung in englischer Sprache – siehe im anschließenden Text – das ist ein großer Fortschritt der japanischen Veranstalter, insoweit kann man sich als Lauftourist gut informieren.

Der "Mount Fuji Marathon" ist einen Besuch/Lauf wert.

Race Rule:: Follow the Japan Amateur Athletic Federation game rule in the 2012 fiscal year.

Participating qualification:

■Full Marathon:
The registered athletes by Athletics Federations of each counties classified by sex. General athletes.
Anyone who can finish the race within the time limit set by organizer. Age above 19 years old (who were born after April 1st, 1994). Anyone in good health.

■17.8km Marathon:
Participants who can finish the race within the time limit. Healthy participants above 18 years old.

Starting time:

■Full Marathon 8:15 a.m. (planned)

■17.8km Marathon: 8:00 a.m. (planned)

The course time limit:

■Full Marathon 6 hours 30 minutes.

■17.8km Marathon 2hours 30 minutes.

■Full Marathon 9,000JPY

■17.8km Marathon 7,000JPY
