Viele der frühen Renndirektoren waren Mitglieder von Laufclubs, Vereinen und warben Clubkollegen an, um die Aufgaben zu teilen. So bauten die New York Road Runners und der Berliner Sport-Club Charlottenburg ihre Lauforganisationen kommerziell aus und beschäftigen heute Dutzende von Mitarbeitern.
