The ING New York City Marathon 2006 – It’s Marathon Week! Make the Most of It
The countdown has started: four days to go until the ING New York City Marathon 2006. You should be enjoying your shorter runs, relishing good carbohydrate-rich meals, and mentally preparing for the 26.2-mile endurance event to come. But there is also a lot of business to take care of: picking up your number and chip, planning travel, packing your race-day baggage, participating in the Barilla Marathon Eve Dinner and Continental Airlines International Friendship Run, and checking out the latest gear at the expo. These tips will ease you through the week.
Take time to be off your feet. As tempting as it may be to see the city, shop, visit museums, check out every booth at the expo, and well, just have fun during the days before the marathon, don’t. If you spend long hours on your feet this week you will not have fresh legs on Sunday morning. Plan on using your free time to read, visit with friends, explore your favorite video game, or take in a movie or two—activities that require sitting down.
Schedule your expo visit. The best times to visit the ING New York City Marathon Health and Fitness Expo are on Thursday, November 2, the day it opens, or Friday during the day. You must bring your race registration card and a valid, government-issued photo ID (or passport for non-U.S. residents) to the expo to pick up your number and timing chip. Expo hours are 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday and Friday; 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Saturday. The expo is traditionally the most crowded on Saturday. Bags may be searched upon entrance to the expo. Click here for directions to the expo, transportation, and a complete list of events, special offers, seminars, and pro athlete appearances.
Meet the world travelers. Runners who are not U.S. residents can meet and mix with other marathon participants from all over the globe in the Continental Airlines International Friendship Run on Saturday morning, November 4. U.S. residents can join the fun by watching this lively field run from the United Nations to Tavern on the Green in Central Park. The celebration begins with the presentation of the Abebe Bikila Award at the United Nations at 8:00 a.m. Friends of international marathoners can run; registration is $20 at the expo.
Enjoy a nutritious dinner. The ticket you will receive in your goody bag at the expo will tell you what time to arrive at the Barilla Marathon Eve Dinner on Saturday, November 4. The party begins at 4:30 p.m. and lasts until 9:00 p.m., but you must attend at your schedule time. Backpacks and suitcases are not allowed; purses are permitted.
Celebrate a little. Wish upon a falling star or, conveniently, an exploding firework at the Poland Spring Presents the Marathon Fireworks at Tavern on the Green on 7:30 p.m., Saturday, November 4. Enter Central Park at 67th Street and Central Park West and walk east to ooh and aah at exactly the spot you’ll finish the race on Sunday.
