Prokopcuka wins third successive Great Edinburgh 10km

Three weeks after taking second place at the Boston Marathon, Latvian, Jelena Prokopcuka, showed little ill effects when she won her third successive victory at the Great Edinburgh Run in the Scottish capital.

Prokopcuka powered away from her nearest challenger, Britain’s Jo Pavey at the halfway point, and was untroubled on her way to the finish line.

„That was really tough and after I broke away at 5km the wind was almost blowing me over, and I had to fight to keep on a straight line,“ she said.

„Then I could feel her (Pavey) catching me and I had to again push hard. It hurt but I did want to win for a third time again.“

Pavey said: „I lost so much on that hill and I just kept trying to catch her, but every time I got close she pulled away on two more steep hills and I fell back again.“

„I’m frustrated, but she is just so strong on the hills and it was good in the end to finish behind by such a tiny amount.“

Hungarian Aniko Kalovics, took third in 33:15.
In the men’s race, Spain’s José Manuel Martínez lead the charge of the Europeans, taking third place in 29:39.
