Russia\’s women dominate at the Rome Marathon – Galina Bogomolova (Russia) 2:22:53

There was a Russian 1 – 2 in the women's race at the Rome Marathon on Sunday, when Russian record holder Galina Bogomolova achieved the third fastest time of the year 2:22:53 to fill the first podium slot and her 38-year-old compatriot Larisa Zyusko took second place in 2:28:18.

This put an end to Hungarian Aniko Kalovics' three event winning streak, but this prolific racer put in a solid 2:29:04 performance in what was only her fourth ever Marathon.

In the men's race, the European results were not nearly as encouraging, with Vitaliy Shafar from Ukraine the first European home in 2:13:35, to take 14th place. Russian twins and former Junior and U23 European Champions made their Marathon debut, with Yevgeniy Rybakov finishing 16th (2:15:09) and Anatoliy Rybakov in 17th (2:17:43). In total 14,563 runners were took part in the 42.195km round the sights of Rome.
