Gateshead, UK – All eyes will be on the men’s 100m at the Aviva British Grand Prix in Gateshead on Saturday (10) where two of the ‘big three’ meet for the first time this season at the top of a star-studded bill for the eighth Samsung Diamond League meeting.

Asafa Powell got the Samsung Diamond League series off to a blistering start when he blasted to a windy 9.75 in his heat at the inaugural meeting in Doha two months ago, and the Jamaican has been in equally sparkling form since, winning in Ostrava, Oslo and Rome where he clocked the world’s quickest time of 9.82, only equalled by Usain Bolt in Lausanne on Thursday night.

The former World record holder claims to be in the form of his life but in Gateshead Powell will face the world silver medallist Tyson Gay for the first time since the American flew to 9.69 at the Shanghai Grand Prix last September, a performance that catapulted him above Powell to number two on the world all-time list behind Bolt.

With Gay and Bolt suffering injury problems, Powell has been the form man this year over 100m, although Gay showed in Eugene with his 19.76 200m that he is well on the comeback trail after his hamstring worries.

Both men have performed superbly on this track before. Powell famously equalled his own World record of 9.77 four years ago, while Gay is unbeaten here for the last two years after winning the 200m in 2008 and the 100m last year in 10.15 into a -2.0 headwind.
