Athletics South Africa – News – SUB 4 MINUTE MILE HOLDS CASH FOR ATHLETES
Athletics South Africa’s track and field season is for an early start, with cash up for grabs for sub-4 minute times clocked in the mile event, during the four Yellow Pages Summer Series meetings at the coast from December 10-18.
SA’s middle distance specialists will have to up the pace if they wish to dip under the magical 4 minute barrier, during the meetings to be held at Coetzenburg, Western Cape (Friday, December 10), in
Oudtshoorn (Monday, December 13), Port Elizabeth, Wednesday, December 15) and Parow, Western Cape (Saturday, December 18).
The first athlete to clock a time faster than 4 minutes during the Yellow Pages Summer Series will collect R5000, with athletes thereafter running faster than the 240 seconds mark, collecting R1000 each.
ASA and Yellow Pages have identified the mile event as an exciting discipline and will provide pace-makers to help SA’s best runners to strive to dip under 4 minutes.

The last athlete to run a sub 4 minute mile in SA was Johan Cronje (3 min 58,81 secs in Parow, Western Cape on December 16, 2005), while the fastest time in a mile event in SA this year stands behind the name of Windy Jonas (4:02.88) clocked in Port Elizabeth during the opening event of the Yellow Pages Series on February 19 this year.
“The intention of the Yellow Pages Summer Series meetings is to combine mass participation with top class athletics,” said ASA board chairman James Evans, who also chairs the national body’s track and field commission.
“We are delighted to work closely with Yellow Pages to add more track and field competition opportunities to the national calendar and look forward to witnessing our athletes taking full advantage of these new platforms to finish 2010 in fine style.”
Lionel Smith, GM Marketing of Trudon (Publishers of Yellow Pages), said that the new additions to the Yellow Pages track and field package will enhance Yellow Pages’ status as a brand that is passionate about creating platforms through which our country’s club athletes can challenge the best in the country.
“The Yellow Pages Summer Series allows for athletics fans at the coast to come to the stadiums and cheer on our country’s track and field athletes in their quest to finish 2010 on a high note,” said Smith.
