Athletics Australia – News – Team Australia set for world titles warm-up
With less than two weeks to go until the 2011 IPC Athletics World Championships take over Christchurch, New Zealand, for 10 days of non-stop track and field action, Australia’s top athletes with a disability are all set for their final hit-out before crossing the Tasman this weekend.
With 44 of the 48 Australians bound for Christchurch set to line up at the Athletics World Champs Warm-Up meet at Sydney Olympic Park this Friday night, the green and gold will be out in force on home soil this week ahead of its world titles campaign.
Headlining the Australian campaign at Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre will be Commonwealth Games champion and world record-holder Louise Ellery (secured shot put), fellow Commonwealth Games gold medallist Simon Patmore (ambulant 100m, ambulant 200m) and track favourite Kelly Cartwright (ambulant 100m, ambulant long jump), the trio set to compete against the best athletes with a disability from around the globe before the world titles get under way later this month.
With athletes from Canada, the Netherlands, the USA, France, Finland and Germany all heading to Sydney Olympic Park this Friday night and free entry for all spectators, the stage is set for a blockbuster night of athletics action.
