The Erdgas Hallen-Meeting in Chemnitz, Germany, on Thursday saw a host of national indoor records including an outstanding effort of 14.45m in the women’s triple jump by Katja Demut.

Demut added nine centimetres to the 14-year-old German indoor record of 14.36m which had been held by Petra Lobinger since 1997.

“I never thought I’d go so far. I’ve been struggling with an infection for the last two weeks and only got the green light to compete from my doctor on Monday,” said the 27-year-old from Jena.

She produced her record leap in the fifth round but she had showed good form from the outset, opening with 14.32m.

Poland’s Malgorzata Trybanska set a national indoor record herself when she went out to 14.16m for second place.

French pole vault star Renaud Lavillenie got his fourth successive victory of the winter when he won his specialist event with a clearance at 5.80m.

It was a short competition for the 2010 European Athletics Championships gold medallist who needed two attempts to get over both 5.60m and then 5.80m before having three reasonably close failures at a new French record of 6.03m.

Lavillenie, who holds the French record outdoors at 6.01m, has made no secret of the fact that he is aiming to improve this winter on Jean Galfione’s long-standing French indoor record of 6.00m, which has been on the books since 1999.

Germany’s Malte Mohr finished second after he cleared 5.60m with his first attempt but then could go no higher.

However, there were German victories in the two shot put competitions.

The 2006 European Athletics Championships gold medallist Ralf Bartels sent his implement out to 20.24m for victory in the men’s event. Another German Marco Schmidt finished second with 20.20m while Croatia’s Nedzad Mulabegovic got a national indoor record of 20.04m in third, an improvement of 10 centimetres on his own mark set six years ago,

Christina Schwanitz won the women’s shot put with 18.05m.

Czech hurdler Petr Svoboda improved his own 2011 world-leading 60m hurdles mark by one-hundredth with a time of 7.55, after running 7.57 in the heats.

Svoboda’s compatriot Zuzana Hejnova, best known as a 400m hurdler and a 2008 Olympic Games finalist, and won over two laps of the track without the barriers in 53.40.

In the women’s 60m hurdles, Switzerland’s Lisa Urech was close to her personal best of 8.00 when she clocked 8.06, after having run 8.08 in her heat.

Belgium’s 2009 European Athletics Indoor Championships gold medallist Eline Berings is clearly not in the same form that she was two years ago and could only finish fourth in 8.17.

France’s Linda Marguet won the women’s 800m in an indoor personal best of 2:02.87, just edging in front of Czech Republic’s 2010 European Athletics Championships finalist Lenka Masna, who was second in 2:02.99.

Nigeria’s Egwero Ogho-Ogene won the men’s 60m with 6.64 but France’s Jimmy Vicaut, the 2010 World Junior Championships 100m bronze medallist and a member of his country’s victorious 4x100m relay team at the 2010 European Athletics Championships, made a big improvement to 6.66.

Vicaut does not turn 19 until next month and it’s highly likely he will be one of the men to watch at this summer’s European Athletics Junior Championships in Tallinn, Estonia.

There was also a thrilling 1500m won by Kenya’s Nixon Chepseba in an indoor best of 3:35.78, with fellow Kenyan William Biwott second in 3:36.02 and Morocco’s Abdelaati Iguider third with 3:36.29.
