The Lake Biwa Mainichi Marathon in Japan starts the racing programme on 6 March, and is likely to be the most competitive race of the day.
There follow three European races: the Lago Maggiore Half Marathon on the shores of the Italian lake, with a stunning scenic backdrop; the Semi Marathon de Paris, boasting 30,000 entrants in a preparatory event for the Marathon next month; and the Marato de Barcelona.
Rounding out the day's running the Lala Marathon takes place in the Mexican city of Torreon, at 1100m altitude.
On the same day international runners were due to gather in Tunisia to prepare for the start of the 100km del Sahara, but the 2011 event has been cancelled due to the uncertainty of the political situation there.
