Those runners who missed yesterday’s entry deadline for the Old Mutual Two Oceans ultra marathon will have the chance to bid for one as 10 entries go on auction from today, as part of a major fundraising initiative for the Bobs for Good Foundation, the official event charity.

Bidding opens at R900 each and provides the participants who missed the entry deadline with a chance to secure an entry. Interested participants can post their bid at www.oldmutual.co.za/twooceansmarathon. The auction runs through until 28 March, with one entry awarded to the highest bidder of each day. Winners will be announced the day after each bid. Winning bids will also receive a PUMA product voucher worth R1 500 and their race entry includes an ‘A’ seeding.

“Over 7 700 ultra entries have already been processed to date but our office is still finalising entries and there’s every indication that this year will see a record field, which we are extremely excited about,” said race director Rowyn James.

All funds raised through this auction initiative will go towards Bobs for Good, a local non-profit organisation, established out of the need to restore dignity and pride to underprivileged learners by giving them a new pair of South African made leather school shoes valued at R100 each.

The half marathon and trail run auctions were extremely successful, with R44 314 raised for Bobs for Good so far. The highest price paid for a half marathon entry was R3 600.

According to Old Mutual’s sponsorship manager Frank Brooks, the auction was first introduced for the 2009 event and has proved to be a successful, yet novel way to raise some extra funds for the official event charity. “It provides those select few who weren’t able to get an entry with a chance to still run the event and support a worthy cause at the same time.”
