METRO GROUP Marathon Düsseldorf
Düsseldorf in an hour
This is how you get to know Düsseldorf best: on foot. Read here what you can see and do in just one hour.
- Königsallee: Stroll along the exclusive shops and take in the atmosphere of the ‘Kö’. After the unfortunate historic incident of a piece of horse manure being thrown at King Friedrich Wilhelm IV in 1848, the street that had originally been Kastanienallee (Chestnut Avenue) was renamed Königsallee (King’s Avenue) in 1851, as a gesture of goodwill to the King. At the end of the ‘Kö-Graben’, the waterway running along the centre of the Kö, and the beginning of Shadowstraße (do make a detour through the Schadow-Arkaden while you are there) you will discover the Triton fountain, the Kö’s landmark. From there, you will have a wonderful view of the whole ‘Kö-Graben’ and, on the other side, at the ‘Kaufhof’ building which was one of Germany’s first department stores at the beginning of the 20th century (Art Nouveau/Josef Maria Olbrich). On the green square in front of it, Corneliusplatz, is Düsseldorf’s oldest fountain, the ‘Schalenbrunnen’.
- On your way into the Altstadt, the old town, you cross Heinrich-Heine-Allee. To the left is Germany’s first high-rise office building, Wilhelm-Marx House (1922-24).
A look into the idyllic inner courtyard (Stadtbrückchen) of this building is a must –if only for the pleasant cafés. - Carsch-House (Art Nouveau/Otto Engler) was pulled down for the construction of the Underground and later on rebuilt on a site 23m away.
- Altstadt: a bit further on, past Carsch-House at Flingerstraße, turn into Hunsrückenstraße. It ends at St. Andreas, the most beautiful baroque church of the Lower Rhine area, which definitely merits a short visit. For more information about the Altstadt you can find on www.duesseldorf-altstadt.de or on www.duesseldorf-tourismus.de
- Bolkerstraße: this is where Heinrich Heine, the city’s most famous son was born. The Loreley song made him world-famous. Opposite his birthplace is the protestant Neanderkirche, a symbol for the freedom of religion granted by the Elector Jam Wellem to his subjects.
- At 11/13/15/18/ and 21 hrs, turn into Schneider-Wibbel-Gasse for a surprise. Bolkerstraße leads onto Marktplatz with the town hall and the Elector Jan Wellem on his horse. His monument is not only Düsseldorf’s emblem, but also the most important equestrian statue north of the Alps. Now you are just a few steps away from the Rhine.
- Burgplatz/Rhine embankment promenade: Burgplatz – note the cart-wheeler fountain under the plane trees – is where Düsseldorf’s heart beats. It is at this point that the little river Düssel that gave the metropolis its name enters the Rhine, the former collegiate church St. Lambertus with the shrine of St. Appolinaris towering in the background. Next to the bridge across the Düssel, the town monument is an impressive memento to more than 700 years of town history. The square is dominated by the old castle tower (housing the shipping museum), last relic of the former electoral palace burned down in 1872.
- Welcome to ‘Father Rhine’, Europe’s most important river! The generously laid-out Rhine Embankment promenade is regarded as the most beautiful river walk on the Rhine, stretching from the Landtag (state parliament) to Oberkassel bridge. Upstream, the view goes to the Media Harbour with its prominent architecture, and on the opposite river bank to the Art Nouveau facades of the stylish district of Oberkassel.
- The wave-shaped paving, designed exclusively for the Rhine Embankment Promenade, carries you past the historic water gauge and the restored ancient Rhine harbour. Say goodbye to the Rhine at Schulstraße – even though it may be hard to tear yourself away.
- Karlstadt: The exquisite district of the Karlstadt is where many of the city’s galleries and antique shops are located. Passing the Film Museum and the Hetjens Museum (German Ceramics Museum), you will reach one of the city’s architectural treasures: Time seems to have stopped at Citadellstraße with its elegant palatial houses dating from the 18th and 19th centuries and the streetscape that seems almost unchanged since those days.
- The Stadtmuseum, the city museum at the corner of Bäcker- and Bergerstraße, gives an insight into Düsseldorf’s history. Take a break in its tranquil garden. Via the romantic Bäckerstraße and Orangeriestraße and crossing Benratherstraße, you get to Carlsplatz with its lively food market on weekdays. From here, take a look at the beautiful buildings along Bilkerstraße, amongst them the Heinrich-Heine-Institute and Clara and Robert Schumann's house, and turn into Bastionstraße – a must for the lovers of antiques. Follow Bastionstraße to return to the ‘Kö. Admirers of good design should pay a visit to ‘stilwerk’ at Grünstraße, the department store that deals exclusively in designer articles.
