Athletics Australia – News – One week to go until the Australian Athletics Championships

Today marks one week to go until competition commences at the 89^th Australian Athletics Championships, with entry lists revealing that almost 700 athletes are set to descend on Melbourne Olympic Park from Friday, April 15.

Showcasing Australia’s best track and field stars across three days, this year’s Championships also marks the last time the event will be held at Melbourne Olympic Park as athletics in Victoria prepares to move to a new, state-of-the-art venue at Albert Park.

“It’s great to see such a large contingent of athletes, both able-bodied and athletes with a disability, making the trip to Melbourne for the Australian Athletics Championships,” Dallas O’Brien, Athletics Australia Chief Executive, said.

“This year marks the first time the Championships will be held in Melbourne since 2001, and with the support of the Victorian Government and the City of Melbourne we are thrilled to see the event return to Olympic Park one last time.

“The strength and size of the fields for many events is an exciting sign of development across the country and I am confident these Championships will provide yet another legacy for a venue which has provided so many outstanding athletics memories.”

Doubling as the selection trial for the IAAF world championships in athletics, Australia’s best track and field stars will be keen to ensure that all automatic selection boxes are checked when competition concludes.
