Run Britain – News – Traffic dodgers on the increase
Whether it's the ever-increasing price of fuel, congestion on the capital's roads, tubes or a general eagerness to get fit. There are an increasing number of Londoners taking to running the streets to work. The so called 'Traffic dodgers' are preferring to put on their running kit rather than their work suit and beating the traffic with their own leg power.
There are many advantages to running to work including keeping fit, avoiding the frustrations of the traffic and a general sense of wellbeing before work. Traffic dodgers put all their work essentials including clothes and laptop in a backpack and run with it to work.
Despite the advantages there can be potential risks too. Specialist musculoskeletal podiatrist Clifton Bradeley explains that carrying excessive weight on your back can make you lean forwards whilst you run increasing your risk of lower back and forefoot pain. Clifton explained, " running with a backpack forces you to lean forwards to balance your altered centre of gravity placing strain on your lower back and forefeet. If you have one leg longer than the other bending forward can strain the delicate discs in your lower back, increasing the risk of problems.
The centre of gravity falls forwards with a backpack placing extra pressure on the front of your feet increasing the risk of injury and pain". Clifton recommends obtaining the correct footwear for your needs from a specialist running store and keeping the weight in your backpack to a minimum by leaving heavier items at work. He also recommends wearing a quality backpack with a support strap across your chest, taking shorter steps and looking straight ahead whilst you run. Despite these mild risks running to work has to be encouraged and is a commendable pursuit where appropriate.
I should have run to work!
