The 26-year-old from Athy is a regular runner and has kept up her running during a hectic year of Rose-related engagements that included trips to India, Australia and America. She runs an average of 8k, five times a week.
“Running is a great way to see more of the places I visit,” she says. “In New York I ran along 5th Avenue and through Central Park and greatly enjoyed the experience. I also find my daily run is a great way of relieving stress or anxiety and it is also ideal for toning up keeping the pounds off.
“I love my food, especially ice cream, so running helps keep my weight steady. I cannot see a time ahead when I will not be running”.
Clare will run the Irish Runner 5 Mile event in the Phoenix Park as a fundraiser for ISPCC, a charity she has much affection for. She trained with ISPCC as a telephone counsellor, dealing with children’s and adolesents’ mental health issues, when she studied in Galway in 2006. She plans to return to Galway to pursue a PHd in Clinical Psychology next autumn. The current Rose of Tralee already has a BA in History and Psychology and an MSc in Mental Health.
The Athy woman has fond childhood memories of taking part in running events in the Community Games in Mosney. She also ran in this year’s Flora Women’s Mini-Marathon, keeping a low profile on the day and finishing in around 50 minutes.
Clare first began running regularly two years ago: “It was like something shifted in my brain and once I started to run I soon discovered the value and the benefits of regular exercise,” she says.
