2012 Big Sur Marathon Quickly Filling
Registration for the popular Big Sur International Marathon opened last Friday and marathon slots are already nearly half full. Runners from all 50 states plus 15 countries have signed up to run the 27th Presentation on April 29, 2012.
"We're on track to sell out in record time," noted race director Wally Kastner. "Once we're full, the demand for held-aside charity spots will increase."
As of opening registration, 3,735 spots were available, with additional blocked entries for Runner's World Challenge, Boston 2 Big Sur, and both national and international charity bibs. With six additional distance events taking place on race weekend, overall registration figures will exceed 13,000.
Female entries for the marathon slightly exceed male entries, a higher than usual split between genders for the marathon distance.
The Big Sur International Marathon has been named as one of the country's top three marathons and the "best destination marathon" in North America. Runner's World Chief Running Officer Bart Yasso stated, "If we were told that we could run only one marathon in our lifetime, Big Sur would have to be it."
