Run Britain – News – Mix in some cross country this autumn

If you've not already tried it, and even if you have tried it, you should consider mixing and matching your road running with a little cross country this autumn. Why?

Well according to our National Cross Country Champion, Steve Vernon, "…Cross Country running is the foundation for all endurance running events. It combines strength, speed and agility…"

Here are a couple of races that we reckon you will enjoy this autumn:

3Counties 10k – 25 September

This 10k Run and 5k Run cross country is NOT a race but a test of Stamina and Endurance.

The 10 and 5 Kilometre run will start at the National Trust Cafe at Hindhead. Surrey.
Over rough terrain taking in some of the most beautiful scenery in Surrey.
But do not be fooled by this beauitful National Trust land.
The run will require not only your fitness and stamina but total concentration.

There is also a 3k walk for health through paths in the Devils Punch Bowl.

Len Mullen Memorial Cross Country – 9 October

A new event this autumn is the Len Mullen Cross Country on Sunday 9th October 2011 held on Steve Vernon's training ground and the home of Stockport Harriers in Woodbank Park Stockport. The race is to mark Stockport Harriers 100th birthday and also to honour Len Mullen, a much respected and greatly missed athlete and coach who recently passed away.

The parkland course is run mainly over grass and paths descending to the River Goyt, one lap for ladies (3 miles) and two laps for men (5 miles).

And how to prepare for a cross country race? Steve recommends "….do some off road running that includes hills. The courses are often very muddy so you need to get used to the soft ground if you haven't run on it before. Try running around your local football pitches or get on some hills in a local park."
