European Athletics (EAA) – News – Europe gets strong representation on IAAF Council
Great Britain’s Sebastian Coe and Sergey Bubka of Ukraine were re-elected as vice presidents of the IAAF during the 48th IAAF Congress in Daegu.
The two stalwarts of European athletics retained their positions on the world governing body’s main decision-making group along with Robert Hersh of the United States and Dahlan Al-Hamd of Qatar during the two-day Congress held on 24-25 August.
Senegal’s Lamine Diack also kept his position as the president of the IAAF for the next four years after being re-elected on Wednesday.
The two-day Congress also saw Russia’s Valentin Balakhnichev voted as the honorary treasurer of the governing body of world athletics.
European Athletics Council Member Sylvia Barlag of the Netherlands along with Italy’s Anna Riccardi and Poland’s Irena Szewinska were elected among the six female individual members on the IAAF Council for the next four years.
Other European members elected on the IAAF Council are Helmut Digel of Germany, Jose Maria Odriozola of Spain and Bernard Amsalem of France.
European Athletics President Hansjörg Wirz has a place on the IAAF Council as the Europe area group representative alongside the other Area Association presidents.
