Irish record holder Joanne Cuddihy (KCH) was disqualified today from the women’s 400m semi-final due to a false start at the IAAF World Track and Field Championships in Daegu, South Korea. This was an unexpected outcome for the Kilkenny woman who is a very seasoned and controlled performer she said “I can’t blame anyone but myself for the false start” and she said she will “now turn my focus to the 4×400m relay for redemption”.

Cuddihy had produced a season’s best of 51.82 to finish third in round one of the 400m yesterday, securing an automatic qualification place into the semi-final. The Kilkenny woman improved her season’s best of 52.15 which she ran at the Woodie’s DIY senior track and field championships and her time was the fastest time that she has run in four years.

Tori Pena (Finn Valley AC) didn’t progress to the final of the Women’s Pole Vault in the morning session. Pena cleared her opening height of 4.10m but then failed three times at 4.25m. This is short of her Irish Record of 4.40m which she set earlier this season.
