Russian javelin thrower Mariya Abakumova was judged to have provided the best individual women’s performance of the 2011 IAAF World Championships by the reputed statistical website www.all-athletics.com

Abakumova struck gold in Daegu with a championship record of 71.99m, the second best throw ever, to shade the Czech former champion Barbora Spotakova in a contest of epic proportions.

It was the first competition in history where two women went beyond 71 metres and although the Czech world record holder produced a brilliant series of throws she ultimately finished 41 centimetres short of the Russian with a best of 71.58m.

Jamaica’s world record setting 4x100m relay team topped the men’s list.

Abakumova now has three meetings lined up before the end of the season, the Samsung Diamond League meeting in Zurich this Thursday, Elstal (in Germany) on Friday and the IAAF World Challenge meeting in Berlin next Sunday.
