Lutz PHILIPP (Germany) (b. 14 Oct 1940 Königsberg) died of leukaemia in Darmstadt on February 1 at the age of 71. His club was ASC Darmstadt – he was teacher.

A top distance runner for the FRG from the mid 1960s to the mid 1970s, he competed at three Olympics: ht 5000m 1964, 23rd 10,000m 1968, and 32nd marathon 1972; and two European Champs: 12th 10,000m 1966 and 7th marathon 1971 (also selected in 1969 when FRG boycotted in the Jürgen May affair).

He was 2nd in the European Cup 10,000m in 1965 and won World University Games medals: silver 5000m in 1965 and bronze 10,000m in 1967 (with 5000m 5th 1963 and 9th 1967). FRG champion at 10,000m 1965, 1967 and 1972, marathon 1971-3, forest run 1967, 1969-73; and indoor champion at 5000m 1963 and 1965-9, and 10,000m 1967-8 and 1970-1.

German records: 10,000m (4) 28:44.8 (1965) to 28:23.4 (1970), 20,000m 59:20.2, 1 hour 20.237m and 25,000m 1:15:31.8 (all 1973), marathon 2;12:50 (1972).
