The traditional Hallesche Werfertage throwing meeting in the German city of Halle produced some sensational results on Saturday, not least of which was 2011 World Championships discus gold medallist Robert Harting's personal best of 70.31m.

Germany's two-time world champion launched his massive effort, the best throw in the world for more than two years, in the third round to go over 70 metres for the first time in his career.

In an outstanding competition, Poland's 2010 European Athletics Championships gold medallist Piotr Malachowski was second with 68.94m, and had two other throws over 68 metres. Great Britain's 2011 European Athletics U23 Championships winner Lawrence Okoye, who is still only 20, added 61 centimetres to his British record with a throw of 68.24m for third place.

Germany's female discus throwers were also in fine form.

The 2012 world leader Nadine Muller won the women's competition with 66.68m while Poland's runner up Zaneta Glanc improved her personal best for the second time in a week with a throw of 65.34m.

Germany's 2011 European Athletics Junior Championships discus silver medallist Anna Ruh impressed in the junior event when she threw 63.04m, the best throw by a junior for 15 years. With three other competitions over 60 metres this year, it confirms her status as the gold medal favourite at the World Junior Championships, which will be held in Barcelona from 10-15 July.

There was a further demonstration of German throwing talent in the shot put when 2011 world champion and 2011 European Rising Star of the Year David Storl reached 21.13m with his last effort to snatch victory from Poland's Tomasz Majewski, who had lead from the fourth round with 21.12m, after Storl had opened with 20.98m

However, there was a Polish win in the men's hammer when 2011 European Athletics U23 Championships gold medallist Pawel Fajdek won with 76.65m, with Germany's Markus Esser second with 75.68m and Slovakia's Marcel Lomnicky third with 75.65m.

Home stars took wins in both the javelin competitions. Mark Frank won the men's event with 80.63m while former European record holder Christina Obergföll won the women's competition with 63.91m.
