Akron Marathon Draws Record Participation

AKRON, Ohio) – More than 15,000 participants, 3,000 volunteers and more than 100,000 spectators lined the streets of Akron, Ohio, on Saturday, Sept. 29 to take part in the tenth anniversary Akron Marathon, presented by Time Warner Cable.  A participation record was set for the tenth year in a row as the full and half-marathon events sold out.

Marathon events include the Full Marathon, presented by Time Warner Cable; Half Marathon, presented by Acme Fresh Markets; 5-Person Team Relay, presented by Novo Nordisk and the Kids Fun Run, presented by Akron Children's Hospital.

The full marathon was won by Richard Kessio of Toledo, Ohio in 2 hours, 18 minutes, 51 seconds, who was nearly seven minutes ahead of second place finisher Aiman Scullion of Kent, Ohio.

The women's full marathon title was won by Shanna Ailes Istnick of Kent in 2:55:10. Second place finisher Lizzie Jesko of Akron ran 2:59:23.

In the half-marathon,  Phillip Lagat of Toledo captured  the race in 1:07:10.

The women's race went to Dorcus Chesang of Toledo in 1:17:58.

Approximately 1,880 children and parents participated in the Kids Fun Run for those ages 14 and under.

The 11th edition of the Akron Marathon will be held Saturday, September 28, 2013.
