2013 Chevron Houston Marathon Race Weekend Schedule
HOUSTON – The Chevron Houston Marathon Race Weekend will bring roughly a quarter-million people to the Houston area in 2013 between participants, spectators and volunteers, which make Race Day the largest single-day sporting event in Houston.
Race Weekend kicks off Friday, January 11 with the Ironman Sports Medicine Institute at Memorial Hermann EXPO and continues on Saturday with the ABB 5K. This will be the first year that the 5K is the day before the Chevron Houston Marathon and Aramco Houston Half Marathon.
Another first this year will be the addition of the We Are Houston RunFest on Jones Lawn at Discovery Green. A two-day interactive festival that begins on Saturday, it will feature all local major sports teams and include giveaways, contests, inflatables and interactive experiences. The main events take place on Sunday, January 13th – the 41st running of the Chevron Houston Marathon and the 11th running of the Aramco Houston Half Marathon, featuring the highest capacity ever of 25,000 participants.
"In our continued commitment to the participant and spectator experience, this year we expanded Race Weekend by moving the ABB 5K to Saturday morning and increasing our cap for the Chevron Houston Marathon and Aramco Houston Half Marathon to a record 25,000 registrants," commented Wade Morehead, Executive Director of the Houston Marathon Committee. "This will improve the runner experience for all three races, and the addition of the family-friendly We Are Houston RunFest at Discovery Green will result in a fun and exciting weekend for everyone downtown."
The Chevron Houston Marathon accounts for over $50 million of economic impact annually. The largest single expense category is restaurants, while hotel expenses are also significant. Additionally, $2.3 million was raised for 60 local non-profits through the Run for a Reason charity program which has generated more than $16 million in its 19-year history.
