Portland Marathon HALF Fills – Charity entries still available –

By GRR 0

Once again the general public entries to our Portland Marathon HALF have sold out! Thank you!

From this point until the event is held on Oct. 6 in conjunction with the other events of the Portland Marathon, the Portland Marathon HALF becomes a charity event. Those wanting to participate still have two ways to register:

1) Get in "Free" buy running or walking FOR one of our Official Charities. Participants get in by raising a small amount of money for a worthy cause. Learn more

2) Register Now. You will be considered a charity runner or walker. Half the entry fee goes to the Portland Marathon's Charity Program. Last year over $200,000 was given to Community based nonprofits, service clubs, school activity groups and school athletic teams. And under this program the registrant need not raise any additional money.

A real "win-win." Learn more

Again, thanks to all of you who registered early and took advantage of our early entry for this event!

The 26.2 Portland Marathon is selling at a Record Pace!

Note: The Registration Fee is
Going up February 15th

Entries for the full distance Portland Marathon are coming in faster than ever before. This year may see a sell out of the Portland Marathon earlier than in prior years.

Normally with the close of the public entries to the Portland Marathon HALF the price of the full distance Portland Marathon will increase.   However we will hold that increase until the end of the day on February 15th. So please mark your calendars and register before that date.

We were pleased that the Competitor Magazine again named the Portland Marathon as the "Best Marathon in the Northwest." The Portland Marathon also received the honor as the "Running Event with the Best Swag."

We think that honor of "Best Swag" includes our Portland Marathon HALF as well because our half-marathoners receive the same swag as our marathoners. Only the finishers shirt, medal, pendant, and event coin are unique to each event. And, our Portland Marathon HALF Finisher's shirt is a finalist for best area finishers shirt among the many events eligible for that honor. Also, our Portland Marathon Medal was the #1 Medallion style medal in the US last year by the Marathon & Beyond's prestigious panel of experts.

"This year both our Half and Full Marathoners will be surprised at the medals they will receive," said medal designer Chris Seiler. "The medals will be a surprise because the Portland Marathon is taking its medal design up a notch. We think the runners and walkers will be really pleased. The design of these awesome medals will be announced in March or April after the prototypes are made," said Seiler.

Of course, all the other goodies for the events will be there too.  The poster, the rose, the tree seedling and all the fabulous food and beverages at the finish.

So sign up early. And sign up by February to miss the next price hike step.

A Letter from the Event Director

We Are the Best of Portland's Half Marathons

Our congratulations to all of you who signed up for The Portland Marathon Half before it officially closed to the public at large.

As with the full length Marathon, we sincerely believe that you have signed up for a world-class half marathon. You have all of the best of the Marathon. The Expo, Start, Finish and Awards ceremony are within a 3 to 4 block area. With a limited field of runners and walkers our Half Marathoners participants assemble in start corrals with Marathoners that have no more than about 1500 persons in an area that is as long as a city block, complete with their own porta potties! This has ensured an easy and faster start as well as a smooth running or walking transition along the course. After your start you move along a course that is basically flat and has only 10 turns. Our running times for the last two years reflect our course is fast!

With respect to those little things, your bib will have your name on it…and very readable (if you have requested this option…and you still can). On the Half course you will be entertained by 37 music and entertainment groups at 30 locations…we believe the most for any half marathon anywhere!

For those finishing in a time of 3 hours or faster you will find very few participants in the finish area after you cross the finish line except for your fellow Half Marathoners. Our first Marathoner does not arrive until about 2.5 hours and then only about 50 Marathoners will cross until the 3 hour mark.

You will receive an abundance of Finish Area Swag (and we have never run out of our goodies): From finisher’s medal, space blanket, rose, event coin, pendant, tree seedling and the long sleeve performance finisher shirt. Plus plenty of food and drink. And before that at the Expo you will receive your short sleeve performance shirt, pre event publication (not a collection of ads), event poster and more.

We are pleased that Competitor Magazine recently again named us "The NW Race with the Best Swag." This follows the accolades Runner's World gave us the year before for swag in our event. No one tries to do it better than we do!

After you depart the Finisher's area you will enjoy a relatively uncrowded reunion area with more fun attractions, music and an easy way to pick up any baggage you may have checked. This area has been expanded which will make it more festive and fun for finisher's and their supporters.

So like our Marathoners, you have done well by signing up with us for the Portland Marathon Half. At this point in time, you all come from 40 States, nearly all the Provinces of Canada and a good number of Countries. We plan to make your journey here a fun and enjoyable one, reflective of all the good things Portland has to offer.

So tell your friends they can still join you in the Half (see related article on "free" and "charity" entry options that remain for the Portland Marathon Half.)

Many thanks. We look forward to seeing you October.

Visit us at the Race Center Expo Feb. 23 at Foot Traffic!

We had so much fun last year chatting it up with local runners and walkers. We hope you come visit us again this year at the 2013 RaceCenter Event Expo on Feb. 23 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Foot Traffic in Northeast Portland (4040 NE Fremont St. Portland, OR 97212)! We'll have freebies and you can sign up on the spot with us!

The Portland Police Bureau Sunshine Division has been named the Official Charitable Donation recipient for all running clothing and shoes discarded at our Event!

Look for barrels at the start/finish and along the course to donate your gently used clothing items! We know most of our participants like to layer up and then strip items off as they go. Put these items in the barrels and the Sunshine Division will wash them and make them available to people in need. Have friends and family bring items to donate to the finish area when they come to meet you!

The Sunshine Division offers emergency food & clothing assistance six days a week at a North Portland warehouse as well as 24/7 through a partnership with the Portland Police Bureau who store food boxes and clothing items at each police precinct that can be dispatched to people in need at any time.

Run Love!

Running and walking can bring people together! Whether you meet your spouse, new friend, or acquaintance! Through the years our event has been a part of several love stories. Jaime Linnerooth’s boyfriend proposed to her at the 2011 Portland Marathon! Amy Mishler and her beau had a running first date and will be tying the knot this summer! Last year Katie Holmes and Eric Johansson exchanged vows near the 20-mile point of the Portland Marathon and then continued on to the finish together! See the video here.

The Portland Marathon Training Clinic – Join the FUN!

By Diane Lechner

Running a marathon may not be a team sport, exactly.  But all that time spent training for a marathon, and all those miles –there’s no need to go at it alone.  Try the Portland Marathon Training Clinic and find that time spent in training runs passes quickly as you start on the path to the marathon start line.
A marathoner-in-training spends a lot of time each week in running gear.  Eventually, the weekly long distance training run becomes quite long – a runner might be out there 3-5 hours one morning each week.  People are social creatures and that’s a very long time to stay engaged, motivated and on-pace when you’re all alone.

Here’s what joining the marathon clinic can do for you both psychologically and physically:

Psychological benefits – when you surround yourself with a team of like-minded people all working toward the same goal, magic happens.  Runners thrive on positivity.

  • Get encouragement from other runners! Nobody understands a runner like another runner.  We know how to help each other get past moments of melancholy, fatigue and doubt.  When you run with a social group, your team can help you continue to believe in yourself.
  • Enjoy distracting conversation! On days when the weather is hotter, colder or windier than you’d prefer, when the miles feeling longer than usual or you’re distracted by life’s other stressors, your team is there to put your mind in a better place.  Time flies when you’re laughing, talking about weekend plans, and trading recipes.
  • Forge new friendships! Running friendships are unique.  Maybe it’s the endorphins.  Usually selfless and always uplifting, the camaraderie among runner friends is unsurpassed by any group.

Physical benefits – running socially with a group, especially one led by experienced running coaches, keeps a runner on the healthiest path to the marathon start line.

  • Free training runs – the clinic offers free training runs every Saturday until the Marathon starting April 6. The clinic has 12 pace groups and several distances so you can find runners at your ability and training level to join.
  • Coaching and training plans – for beginners,  the evening seminar sessions, online training plans, copy of Marathoning Start to Finish plus the coaching advice will help you every step of the way to the starting line. The Advanced clinic is for those of you who have some expedience but want help to get a better performance through weekly speedwork sessions and coaching.
  • Reinforce your training plan – we benefit from being surrounded by supportive, encouraging runners who help us make healthy choices, like running the distance on our training plan. What is an “accountabili-buddy?”  The people in your running group who look forward to your showing up every week and don’t let you oversleep your run.  Being held accountable by teammates is a powerful incentive to keep you faithful to your training plan.
  • Keep your training runs on pace – how can you tell when you are running the right pace for your long run?  A runner should be able to talk, whistle or sing show tunes as comfortably at the first as the last miles of a long, slow training run.  Running socially and making conversation with your friends ensure that everyone abides.
  • Exchange tips for healthy running – runners learn a lot from listening to other runners’ experiences.  Long runs are a great time to trouble-shoot a tight muscle by trading stretch ideas, or exchange thoughts on post-run recovery snacks.  Runners grow by hearing what techniques work (or don’t work) for others.  Add coaches to the equation and find that you have the best kind of social running group with healthy benefits

Training for a marathon can be the most challenging and fun experience a runner can enjoy.  Why not minimize the challenges and maximize the fun?  Train with the Portland Marathon Training Clinic and see how the time – and miles – can fly.
