The Legacy Games: the Economic and Social Impact of London 2012 – British Ambassador Mr Simon McDonald CMG – Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin
2012 was a year of international attention for the UK. The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games brought 15,000 athletes from more than 200 countries to the British capital, and over 9 million people came to watch the sporting competitions in the venues.
But now that the medals have been presented, what will be the long-term impact of planning and staging the Games? In this lecture, British Ambassador Simon McDonald will discuss the "legacy" of London 2012 in terms of infrastructure, the economy, participation in sports, community engagement and social attitudes.
Mr Simon McDonald CMG joined the British Diplomatic Service in 1982 and has served in Jeddah, Riyadh, Bonn, Washington and Tel Aviv, and in a wide range of jobs in London.
He took up his position as British Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany in October 2010.
After the talk, the Ambassador has kindly agreed to answer questions from the audience. The event will be followed by a small reception.
