Athletics New Zealand – News – Nick Willis shows good form in preparation for World Champs qualifier attempt
Olympic silver medallist Nick Willis showed some handy form at the end of a solid block of training in New Zealand, winning a 1500 metres race in Auckland tonight in 3 minutes 36.51 seconds.
Willis was running in a specially set up race at the AUT Millennium track on the North Shore in Auckland in preparation for an attempt on the World Championships 1500m qualifying time of 3 minutes 35.00 seconds in Sydney in a week.
The FAST 1500 race attracted a who’s who of in-form New Zealand middle distance athletes, just over three weeks out from the New Zealand Track & Field championships.
Sitting behind the early pace of Thomas Monnery and Sam Petty, Willis ran through the first lap in 57 seconds and backed up with a 58 second on lap 2, chased by Hamish Carson and Malcolm Hicks.
Running on his own for the last 500 metres after the pacemakers dropped out, Willis reached the bell in 2 minutes 40 seconds and surged home with a last lap of 56 seconds. Hicks got up for second in 3:44.95 while Carson faded to third in 3.45.11.
Willis will be happy with the performance on a cool, breezy evening as he prepares for his bid on the World Championships 1500 metres title in Moscow in August.
