European Athletics (EAA) – News – Baby joy for Pavey but she will keep on running

Jo Pavey, who produced a brilliant performance to win silver in the 10,000m at the European Athletics Championships in Helsinki, will miss this summer's World Championships in Moscow because she is pregnant with her second child.

The British runner is due to give birth in September but at the age of 39, it will not be the end of her career.

She is already targeting next year's European Athletics Championships in Zurich and the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

Pavey, whose son was born in 2009, said: "I fully intend to carry on and my aim is to make the team again in Rio.

"It will be very special if I can make those Games.

"I am getting older but I have been encouraged to continue after running a personal best in the 10,000m in London."

It was quite a year in 2012 for Pavey.

After her superb run in Helsinki, where she finished second in 31:49.03 as Portugal's Ana Dulce Felix won in 31:44.75, Pavey progressed to be the highest European finisher in both the 5000m and 10,000m at the Olympic Games.

She was seventh in both races in London with her 10,000 PB being 30:53.20.

Zurich could be her first major return. Peter Eriksson, head coach of British Athletics, said: "We are delighted for Jo and (husband) Gavin and will work with her to ensure she can return to competition in 2014 in great shape."

But Pavey's British teammate, javelin thrower Goldie Sayers, has suffered a setback.

Battling back from a second operation on her elbow, she now faces further surgery.

Sayers wrote on twitter: "I'm gutted and incredibly frustrated. Good news – it makes me more determined than ever to make this comeback special."
