Athletics Australia – News – ENTRY LISTS: Go for 2&5 Perth Track Classic
A scintillating head-to-head between Greg Rutherford (GBR) and Mitchell Watt (GBR) in the men’s long jump headlines the Go for 2&5 Perth Track Classic this Saturday 16 March.
The second leg of the Qantas Australian Athletics Tour, the Western Australian instalment of National Athletics Series, for which entry lists were released this morning, will also welcome the best performed athletes from the Sydney Track Classic including Dani Samuels (NSW), Kim Mickle (WA) and Melissa Breen (ACT).
Thrilling the parochial British crowd in the main stadium on ‘Super Saturday’ at the 2012 London Olympic Games, Rutherford won gold with a leap of 8.31m. He is the British national record holder thanks to his 8.35m personal best, and his athletics career has included a Commonwealth Games silver medal, two victories across the Samsung Diamond League, and five national titles (including one indoor).
Watt has won a medal at every major championship he has competed in, with his trophy cabinet including Olympic and IAAF World Championships silver, and bronze from both the IAAF World and World Indoor Championships. He won the Samsung Diamond League in 2011, and that same year soared a monster 8.54m to eclipse the Australian and Oceania record then held by Jai Taurima.
Australian Flame Fabrice Lapierre (NSW) will join Rutherford and Watt on the runway in Perth to mark his first jump in Australia this year.
Lapierre missed the 2012 Olympic Games after failing to qualify, but his impressive career has delivered the IAAF World Indoor Championships and Commonwealth Games gold medal in 2010, a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games in 2006. He has also won three national titles including when he delivered arguably the performance of the championship with an unbelievable wind assisted 8.78m leap to win gold in Perth in 2010.
Samuels will return to the throwers circle for the women’s discus, once again chasing a mark beyond 64 metres, while Mickle will compete in front of her home crowd in the women’s javelin and Breen will launch from the blocks in the women’s 100m and 200m.
