Athletics Australia – News – Powell still on track for Melbourne
Despite hamstring tightness placing Asafa Powell’s participation in Monday's Semi-Finals of the Australia Post Stawell Gift under a cloud, he is still optimistic about running in the Qantas Melbourne World Challenge on Saturday April 6.
The former 100m men’s world record holder ran 12.24sec off scratch in his heat at Stawell on Saturday, finishing third but his time has qualified him for the Semis despite running conservatively.
"I was having some issues with it over the past few days," Powell said.
"I had a good practice session yesterday but in the warm-up today it felt tight.
"At one point I was saying I didn't want to risk it but everyone seemed so excited to see me run so I thought I would see what I could do."
After the race, Powel had his hamstring assessed by medical staff and later confirmed that he remained optimistic about running at the Melbourne stop of the Qantas Australian Athletics Tour on Saturday April 6.
