Athletics New Zealand – Kimberley Smith fast on the road in Massachusetts and Weekly Roundup

USA – Westfield 5km Road Race, Massachusetts – 30 March 2013
Kimberley Smith was in great form finishing 18th overall and the first women in an exceptionally fast time of 14m 48s. Smith was nearly a minute ahead of Amy Hastings (15m 32s) and Tsenay Gebre (15m 47s).

Smith’s time was just two seconds outside her New Zealand national track record of 14m 45.93s set in Rome in 2008. Her husband Patrick Tarpy finished one place ahead of her in 14m 46s.

Sam Howell Memorial Invitational, Weaver Stadium, Princeton New Jersey – 6 April 2013
Julia Ratcliffe qualified for the World University Games in Kazan Russia in July with a winning distance of 66.69m in the hammer throw. Ratcliffe was just 31cm short of her New Zealand national record set in Spain in July last year. The Games performance standard is 66.30m.
Ratcliffe’s series was: 63.48m, F, 63.12m, 65.07m, F, 66.69m.

IAAF World Challenge, Lakeside Stadium Melbourne – 6 April 2013
New Zealand athletes scored two victories at the world challenge meeting in Melbourne, Stuart Farquhar had a season’s best throw of 81.07m with the javelin and Fiona Morrison clocked a personal best of 13.45s in winning the 100m hurdles. This betters her previous best of 13.48s in Sydney in March.
Personal bests were also recorded by Camille Buscomb with 4m 18.86s in the 1500m, improving on her 4m 19.66s set in Melbourne last year, Hugo Beamish who ran the 5000m in 13m 47.34s to better an indoor time of 13m 51.60s recorded in Seattle in February 2011 and Cameron French with a time of 50.56s in the 400m hurdles bettering his third placing time of 50.87s at this year’s nationals.

North Island Secondary Schools Athletic Championships, Colin Pugh Sports Bowl – 6/7 April 2013
Pascal Kethers improved 10 centimetres on his personal best in winning the open boys pole vault with a clearance of 4.90m. Eliza McCartney won the open girls pole vault in a new NI record of 3.90m. Records tumbled in the throwing events, Matthew Bloxham out to just on 70 metres in the hammer throw and 18.41m in the shot put. Kyle Van der Merwe DT 1.5kg 57.61m NI record and 5kg SP 17.79m. William Smart from Wanganui was sharp over 100m improving his PB from 11.05s to 10.99s into a head wind. Amy Robinson went close to the New Zealand under 18 300m hurdles record of 42.51s in setting a NI record of 42.57s.
