RUNNING GERMANY – HAMBURG – Haspa Marathon Hamburg – Run for Boston – The favorites and top athletes

Dear Athletes, we felt very touched by all the sympathy you have shown towards the victims of Boston and all your suggestions to take a stand against terrorism and violence on Sunday. We will pass on your comments to the Organizers of the Boston Marathon.

Additionaly, your almost unanimous mindset to run the Haspa Marathon Hamburg 2013 more than ever infused us with respect and a certain sense of happiness. We are also of the opinion that an occasion like this is always shocking, but cannot intimidate us. Out of respect for the victims’ fate and their families, we will apply a bracelet in the event colors of the Boston Marathon.

All participants receive this bracelet for free and can wear it voluntarily on Sunday.

Despite these awkward days we hope you have a good preparation time and a beautiful running experience next weekend.

The favorites and top athletes

Last year Ethiopian Shami Dawit won the Hamburg Marathon in a world-class time of 2:05:58. He ran the fastest Hamburg Marathon ever. This year, two Kenyans aim to break Dawit’s course record. Eliud Kipchoge (photo) is this year’s top favorite. The most experienced athlete, who ran a half marathon in Lille in 59:25 last year, is indeed giving his marathon debut.

The second contender for the win is Wilson Kiprop. The 26-year old became Half Marathon World Champion two years ago and won the Roma-Ostia half marathon this year in an impressive time of 59:15 minutes. The most interesting question is, if both Kenyans can keep up the pace, running 42,195km instead of 21km.

Also 22-year old Ethiopian Limenih Getachew can be considered as an insiders’ tip. He seemed to be the winner of last year’s Cologne Marathon, which was his first Marathon, but unfortunately he was directed to the wrong way the last few metres. However, he ran 2:07:39h in Cologne.
Chele Dechasa (Ethiopia, PB: 2:06:33), Joseph Gitau (Kenya, PB: 2:06:58) and Lawrence Kimaiyo (Kenya, PB: 2:07:01) should be kept in mind as well.

The winner of Paris Marathon, Peter Some, showed, how the athletes can outgrow themselves. He improved his personal best nearly three minutes, running 2:05:38h, which was exactly the winner time of Ethiopian Tilahun Regassa, who won the Rotterdam marathon last sunday.

The fight for the Hamburg Marathon Championship receives another fellow campaigner, Tobias Sauter. Jan-Oliver Hämmerling, last year’s winner, seems to be without a chance, because Sauter has an eight minutes faster personal best (2:17:27h). Having the unique audience behind him, Hämmerling will nevertheless try to defend his title.
