"LEARNING TO COMPETE"In partnership with Rio de Janeiro Athletics Federation and the Physical Education Army School this weekend we organized a junior cross country competition for children aged from 8 to 17 from neighborhood schools and other communities.

The competition took place around the track at the Sao Joao Fort overlooking the Sugar Loaf Mountain. The Mirim Race project developed by SSG Education has been evolving for several years in both the state of Rio and Sao Paulo.  It is not just entertainment or sport, but addresses the issue of perception of the urban environment.

It specifically addresses the three stages of the educational process: the initial logistical phase involving research of the environment; a productive phase offering the opportunity to explore and produce artwork in conjunction with a sports event in, an open, pleasant place and, lastly, the development of the imagination in the individuals exposed to this.

The educational process of self-realization, socialization and a sense of belonging can be achieved by both the inclusion of children in sports held in green, open spaces and exposure to artistic endeavor.

This is capable of contributing to their sense of belonging and participation in society at large. This most recent children's race, inspite of two days of rain, attracted 12 sports clubs and around 400 participants.

Although the event counted with top national juvenile athletes, the greatest achievement of this event was giving children the opportunituy to  participate in the competition, regardless of their athletic ability.

We thanks the clubs and associations who attend the event: Rio 2016, Vasco da Gama, Estação Conhecimento, Instituto Mangueira do Futuro, Ginásio Experimental Olímpico, EM Estácio de Sá, EM Silveira Sampaio, Escola de Bola Santa Marta, Fundação Esporte Macaé, Associação Esportiva Santa Mônica, Projeto Vila Parque da Cidade; below the route of 400 meters long.
