Given the hiatus in the European marathon program, due to the approaching summer months, the focus really shifts to the local events. As well as the larger events, such as the Gold Coast and C2S, there is also the smaller, yet excellently organised events such as the Hunter Valley, Townsville, Perth and Adelaide Marathons.

Having said that, it's always time to be thinking about your next overseas marathon and we will be adding a number of new events to our website in the coming weeks. This week we have featured the adidas Auckland Marathon and Half Marathon. Local Hunter runner and current Australian Marathon and Half Marathon champion Scott Westcott tuned up for the World Athletics Championships with a record breaking track run at the Newcastle Athletics Field last Friday.

Track races over 25,000m and 30,000m are rarely run – that's not surprising given you have to slog out 75 laps for the 30,000m. But that didn't deter Westcott – the Australian records for these distances had remain unchallenged for 33 years and were set by fellow Hunter runner Brian Morgan – and Scott successfully challenged these records on the same track and the same date as Morgan back in 1980.

He regretted his decision to go for the same date when Friday's weather turned nasty – bitterly cold and extremely windy. But arrangements were in place and the local publicity machine ensured a good turnout of supporters so there was no turning back. Breaking the records in those conditions was no easy feat – he scraped through by 13 seconds in the 25,000m and a slightly more comfortable 83 seconds for the longer journey. The new records now stand at 1.20.18 and 1.37.10.

As reported in the Newcastle Herald, Scott said "Brian Morgan had told me, 'It's different, running 30ks on the track compared to the road,' and he was right. It's only three quarters of a marathon and I thought I'd have it covered, but it got really tough at about the 23k mark, mainly because of the wind. I had to dig really, really deep."

Scott was pre-selected for the marathon at the World Championships in Moscow in August when he won the Australian Championships in Melbourne last October. RunFun Travel will be in Moscow to support Scott and others in the Australian team.
