VISITING GERMANY: BERLIN – Chancellor Merkel to Welcome President Obama in Berlin on June 18 and 19
US President Barack Obama will travel to Berlin for an official visit on June 18 and 19 upon the invitation of Chancellor Angela Merkel. Chancellor Merkel is looking forward to this visit and to talking with President Obama about a broad range of bilateral and global issues, including further deepening transatlantic relations.
President Obama will hold a speech at the Brandenburg Gate on June 19, and, according to the White House, he will speak about the deep and enduring bonds between the United States and Germany, the vital importance of the transatlantic alliance, and the values that bind us together.
During his first term in office, President Obama visited Germany in 2009 for the NATO Summit in Baden Baden and in 2010 to meet with Chancellor Merkel in the historic eastern city of Dresden. As a presidential candidate in 2008, Obama visited Berlin and held a speech before approximately 200,000 people at the Siegessäule victory column.
Chancellor Merkel and President Obama have also met numerous times in the United States, most recently at the G-8 Summit in Camp David and the NATO Summit in Chicago, both in May 2012. In June 2011, President Obama welcomed her to the White House for an official visit and presented Chancellor Merkel with the Presidential Medal of Freedom at a State Dinner.
President Obama’s visit to Berlin will occur just days before the 50th anniversary of President John F. Kennedy’s landmark speech in Berlin, where he famously declared, “Ich bin ein Berliner.”
