VISITING GERMANY: BERLIN – Obama visits Berlin – On Wednesday, the 19th of June, President Obama will give a speech at the Brandenburg Gate

US President Barack Obama will be visiting Berlin at the 18th and 19th of June 2013. He will arrive in Berlin during the evening of the 18th of June after attending the G8-summit in Northern Ireland.

On Wednesday, the 19th of June, an extensive program is planned including meeting with Chancellor Angela Merkel. the highlight of Obama's visit will be his speech in front of Brandenburg Gate.

President Obama will be accompanied by First Lady Michelle Obama and their two daughters.
 
 

Speech at the Brandenburg Gate

 

On Wednesday, the 19th of June, President Obama will give a speech at the Brandenburg Gate to invited guests. The President's speech is scheduled to begin between 4 to 4.30pm. There are no plans for a public viewing of Obama's speech.

 

Closures and Security Checks

 

Extensive security arrangements and traffic restrictions are already underway. They will affect locals and visitors.

 

Security Information and Closures

 

Brandenburg Gate

 

The area around Brandenburg Gate will be largely cordoned off during the President's speech. Pariser Platz is also closed for traffic until the 21st of June. Visiting the Brandenburg Gate will not be possible on this day.

 

Reichstag

 

The Reichstag will also be closed on the 19th of June.

 

Charlottenburg Palace

 

Extensive barriers and security measures will also be in place at Charlottenburg Palace on the 19th of June; the palace will also be closed to visitors on that day.

 

Potsdamer Platz and the Government Quarter

 

There will be a ban on leaving items and parking bikes on Potsdamer Platz and in the Government Quarter. Increased security checks and short-term closures are expected.

 

Other closures

 

Other short-term road closures are expected. They are not confirmed yet because the route of the presidential motorcade is strictly secret.

For safety reason residents as well as visitors should carry their ID in case of security checks.
