On March 1, 2013, the Jerusalem Marathon took place under the motto “Breathtaking Jerusalem Marathon”: Breathtaking could refer to both the history and sites of the “Holy City”, as well as to the elevation profile of the marathon, which takes a great toll on the participants.

Berlin has a sporting partnership with Jerusalem for decades through the state sports association, Landesportbund Berlin (LSB Berlin), which takes athletes from Berlin to Jerusalem every year, as well as bringing athletes from Jerusalem to Berlin.

In December 2012, basketball players from Jerusalem came to Berlin to compete with the clubs in Berlin. Miri Fiengold, who works in the city administration in Jerusalem and is involved with the Jerusalem Marathon, came to Berlin as part of that delegation.

During a previous visit to the race in Jerusalem, which at the time was still a half marathon, we had met and had arranged that when she came to Berlin she would bring along materials and souvenirs from the Jerusalem Marathon for the AIMS Marathon Museum of Running – Berlin Sports Museum Berlin.

Miri Fiengold had plenty of extra luggage, filled with her bounty for the museum. Posters, medals from various years, participant bags, race numbers, invitations, flyers, informational materials, t-shirts, programmes, lists of results and videos will now be preserved in the museum to document the race.

Of course, Miri Fiengold has also agreed to collect as much commemorative material for the Berlin Sports Museum from this year’s “Breathtaking Jerusalem Marathon” in 2013, which boasted a record number of 17,000 participants.
