Athletics South Africa – News – TEAM FOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS IN ATHLETICS ANNOUNCED
Athletics South Africa has selected a team of 30 athletes to participateat the IAAF World Championships in Athletics in Moscow, Russia from 10-18 August 2013.
The team of 22 track & fieldathletes, six marathoners and two race walkers, includes 15 athletes who havemet the IAAF A Standard for the track & field programme.
TRACK &FIELD TEAM
Heading the track & field team isformer world indoor long jump champion and Olympic silver medallist, KhotsoMokoena, currently ranked 6th in the world for this year. Hisyounger compatriot and SA Long Jump Champion, Zark Visser, is ranked 7th.Lynique Prinsloo, ranked 10th in the world in the women's long jump,will make her debut at the World Championships.
As has become customary, a fullcompliment of men's 400m Hurdlers have met the A standard, with 2011 finalistsLJ van Zyl and Cornel Fredericks being joined by PC Benecke. In the women's400m Hurdles, Anneri Ebersohn was chosen over clubmate Wenda Nel Theron asEbersohn is the SA Champion. Both had achieved the B standard and could notboth be included. As with the men's shot put, where Orazio Cremona is chosenover Jaco Engelbrecht, the selectors went with the national champion.
Sprint sensation and double World StudentGames gold medallist Anaso Jobodwana has been included in the 100m and 200m. Heis likely to be joined by the exciting new talent, Akani Simbine, who set a newnational junior 100m record in December last year. Unfortunately, African 100mChampion Simon Magakwe was not available for selection due to injury. Simbinewill be confirmed in the team provided no other athlete achieves a faster Bstandard before 28 July 2013.
Andre Olivier, who has been showing greatform in the IAAF Diamond League meetings this season, will line up in the 800m.While the SA record may be a difficult task for him this year, the teamincludes national record holders Johan Cronje (1500m), Willem Coertzen(Decathlon), Lehann Fourie (110m Hurdles), Chris Harmse (Hammer Throw) andSunette Viljoen (Javelin Throw). African Champion, Victor Hogan (Discus) andnational 400m champion, Wade van Niekerk, complete the athletes who haveachieved the A qualifying standard.
World Student Games gold medallistStephen Mokoka has achieved the B standard in the 10 000m, joining ElroyGelant (5000m), Robert Oosthuizen (Javelin Throw) and Justine Palframan (200m)as athletes who will be added to the final team provided no-one achieves abetter B standard than them.
Juan van Deventer (injured) and BurgerLambrechts were unavailable for selection.
The final team will be confirmed on 29July, giving athletes who have not yet qualified a last opportunity to do so.
MARATHON TEAM
The marathon team is a mix of experienceand youth, with national champion and new road running revelation, CorneliaJoubert, joining Olympians Irvette van Zyl and Tanith Maxwell in the women'steam. Van Zyl joins her husband, LJ, in the team. Rene Kalmer was unavailablefor selction.
The men's team includes former New YorkMarathon winner and multiple national record holder, Hendrick Ramaala. With Stephen Mokoka deciding to concentrate on the10 000m, Ramaala is the second fastest during the qualifying period. He isjoined by Lusapho April and Sibusiso Nzima.
RACE WALKING TEAM
Two race walkers, Olympian Marc Mundell and LebogangShange, will take part in the 50km and 20km events respectively.
