RUNNING USA – FitOne 5K, 9K and Expo Encourages Women as Community Role Models

BOISE – FitOne, formerly the Women's Fitness Celebration, is committed to providing further opportunities to inspire women and their families to become active participants of fun, healthy living – ultimately building healthier communities.

There is a place for everyone with FitOne, whether you are looking to walk or run your first 5K distance or go a little farther and set a PR in the new women's 9K course. Registration is open to participate or volunteer at the FitOne event Thursday to Saturday, September 19-21, 2013 in downtown Boise.

"Our original mission to inspire the overall health and fitness of a community has not changed; it has only evolved and expanded to be more inclusive and family-friendly," said Anne Audain, co-founder of the Women's Fitness Celebration, champion athlete and pioneer in women's sport. "The exciting changes we are introducing through FitOne this year and moving forward will allow women to set higher goals and strive for them, as role models among their families and communities."

The women's 9K offers a scenic point-to-point course through Boise's most picturesque landmarks. The women's 5K run/walk now welcomes a 5K Family Wave, presented by Chobani. The Family Wave, which is the final starting wave of the 5K run/walk, provides all ages, abilities, genders and members of the family the ability to join in supporting the message to inspire overall health and fitness in our communities. And a new Competitive Stroller Wave answers the call from women who prefer to run with their strollers out ahead of the pack on event day!

"I strongly believe health and lifestyle changes happen together as a family," said Kristin Armstrong, 2x Olympic Gold Medalist and Executive Director of Community Health for St. Luke's Ortho/Neuro and Sports Medicine. "Through the many roles we have as women – as moms, girlfriends, sisters, daughters, wives – engaging our family in what we are doing to take healthier steps in our own lives, can make all the difference in the health and happiness of those closest to us."

In addition to the run/walk/stroll events, the two-day FitOne Expo will be free and open to the public on Thursday and Friday, September 19-20 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Boise Centre.  Promoting healthy choices among all ages and to everyone is paramount to the mission of FitOne, and the Expo is designed as an experiential and educational window into how healthy living can be fun.

Visitors will experience the "Fuel Up Lounge", presented by Idaho Dairy Council and "Indulgence Alley", while perhaps taking in one or two of the FitOne Express Seminars such as "Mining Your Family History: What Your Genes Tell You" or "Pantry Potential: A great dinner tonight with what you already have on hand."

All registered participants in the 5K or 9K will also have access to "Know Your Numbers", a series of free health screenings provided in collaboration with St. Luke's and SelectHealth.

Produced and sponsored by St. Luke's Health System, Idaho's only community owned Health System, FitOne is the evolution of the 20-year St. Luke's Women's Fitness Celebration, one of the largest women's only 5K run/walk and women's show events in the country, which takes place September 19-21, 2013 in Boise, Idaho. The title beneficiary for the event is St. Luke's Children's Hospital.

In 2013, FitOne is introducing a new 5K Family Wave, a women's only 9K course throughout scenic downtown Boise and a 2-day Expo offering free health screenings to all registered participants. Key sponsors include KTVB, Idaho Dairy Council, KeyBank, SelectHealth, University of Idaho, Peak Broadcasting, Idaho Statesman and Healthy Idaho Magazine.
