European Athletics (EA) – Heidler looks to banish the memories of Moscow
Betty Heidler will be hoping the home crowd can help her salvage her season in one of sport's most famous venues on Sunday.
Berlin's Olympic Stadium stages the 72nd ISTAF and the women's hammer reaches its last stage in the IAAF World Challenge.
The series that started for the women back in May in Beijing has Germany's Heidler sitting second in the rankings with 226.93m, with Poland's Anita Wlodarczyk leading the way with 232.74m.
It would take a great performance from Heidler to turn the tables at the top of the event, but there is nothing like a big crowd for inspiration.
Heidler won gold at the European Athletics Championships in Barcelona in 2010 with 76.38m but since then, she has experienced both highs and lows at the major events.
In Daegu in 2011 she threw 76.06m to win silver at the World Championships but then 12 months later she managed only 65.06m when she was defending her European title in Helsinki.
It saw her finish 17th in qualifying before a few weeks later, a throw of 77.13m brought her Olympic bronze in London.
Only last month it was a familiar story at the World Championships in Moscow.
One of the favourites for a medal, she once more did not make it into the final, with her best of 68.83m seeing her finish 18th in qualifying as Russia's Tatyana Lysenko, who is third in the hammer challenge with 224.89m, retained her title with 78.80m with Wlodarczyk second with 78.46m.
Lysenko will be in Berlin as Heidler looks to overcome the disappointment of her World Championship performance but as her personal history shows, she could be set for an impressive display.
Which Betty Heidler will turn up?
The crowd will have to wait and see, but no doubt she will be determined to impress as the season moves towards its conclusion.
