TCS Amsterdam Marathon sees huge growth

The TCS Amsterdam Marathon is seeing huge growth in the number of participants. Registrations can be accepted until 29 September and organiser Le Champion expects the limit of 40,000 participants to be easily exceeded. This means that participation has doubled in seven years.

For the first time ever, the limit of the Mizuno Halve Marathon and the TCS 8 km will also be attained and registrations will have to close early for these distances.

It is also worth noting that the number of participants in the marathon has also risen significantly. The largest marathon in the Netherlands appeals both to those within the country and those abroad. The marathon does not yet have a limit About 15,000 participants are expected to register for the classic distance. In comparison: in 2005, 6,473 marathon runners registered and in 2000, this was just 2,241.

In 2010, Le Champion came up with an ambitious plan which stated an expectation that 37,500 participants would register in 2014. This target has been reached two years earlier than expected. Last year, 38,000 participants registered. This number will easily be exceeded during the 38th edition.

The marathon, which has been awarded the IAAF Gold Label, now sits alongside the largest marathons in Europe. With over 80 different nationalities competing, it is clear that people throughout the world love the TCS Amsterdam Marathon.

Amsterdam will be completely taken over by the TCS Amsterdam Marathon on Sunday 20 October. The participants – who can take part in the marathon, Mizuno Half Marathon and the TCS 8 km – run over a quick, flat and appealing course with many tourist highlights. A particular highpoint this year is the section through the Rijksmuseum.

It is a city marathon within which sport, culture and art are cleverly combined. The Amsterdam 2013 celebrations will not go unnoticed and the ‘golden’ theme, thanks to the award of the IAAF Gold Label, will also be clearly visible.
