Great Ocean Road Marathon/Australia Launch 2014 – The Great Ocean Road Marathon is a part of the two-day Festival of Distance
IMG officially announced their acquisition of The Great Ocean Road Marathon and launched the 2014 event today on the shores of Apollo Bay, adding to their impressive portfolio of internationally recognised sporting events.
The marathon, which is staged along the iconic Great Ocean Road with stunning views of the Southern Ocean, celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2014.
Martin Jolly, Senior Vice President & Managing Director IMG said today at the launch: “IMG was attracted to the event because of its rich history, world class location and the continuing growth of the running market in Australia. IMG are proud to support the Colac Otway Shire and will continue to grow the event so that it will provide a positive economic impact across the region, supporting the local community.”
Local Torquay resident Nicky Buckley joined Cr Frank Buchanan, Councilor Colac Otway Shire and Martin Jolly to cut the start tape, formally launching the 2014 event and declaring registrations open.
In 2013 over 5700 entrants competed from over 12 countries, organisers are expecting to increase participation to over 6,000 for the 2014 competition.
In addition, the announcement of chief beneficiary charity The Apollo Bay and District Health Foundation (ABDH) was noted with Mr. Jolly presenting ABDH Chair, Andrew Buchanan, with a $5000 cheque to kick-start fundraising efforts.
Andrew Buchanan states: “The Apollo Bay and District Health Foundation is very excited to be the lead charity for the 2014 Great Ocean Road Marathon in partnership with IMG. This iconic event allows many people and viewers to experience and enjoy our coast over a terrific fun filled weekend. As the lead charity for this event we have an undreamed of opportunity to promote and inform many locals and visitors of our work, as well as financially supporting organisations and programmes within our district.”
, hosting a number of running events that caters to all ages and levels of fitness.
Starting at Lorne Hotel, Mount Joy Parade and finishing at Apollo Bay Hotel, Great Ocean Road, it’s natural beauty and panoramic views will be a key motivator for competitors as they take on the 45km marathon.
The marathon has over the years attracted local and international athletes such as Steve Moneghetti, Craig Mottram and Kenyan Joel Chepkopol.
