On the weekend of the XXXI Mexico City Marathon there was a meeting of Mexico´s AIMS members and future members. The race directors met in order to sign an agreement focused upon cooperation and solidarity. The objective of this agreement is to promote the organization of long distance races throughout the country and to improve runners’ experiences at Mexican races.

The goal is to improve the interchange of knowledge, information, and experience among the members and to benefit runners and the Mexican society as a whole through the sport of running.

This agreement was created through contributions from all members, and it was signed at the Mexico City Marathon´s expo. The ceremony was crowned by the lighting of the marathon flame in the historic Olympic cauldron, with the message of the marathon flame serving as its inspirational motivation.

The race directors donated items from their marathons and half marathons, including t-shirts, medals, flyers and posters for the AIMS Marathon Museum of Running. It is their hope that Mexico will be viewed as great running destination, a country with great and well-organized distance races that plans on making its contribution to the history of running.

The donators are:

1.     Maratón Internacional Lala de Torreón
2.     21K Atlas Colomos de Guadalajara
3.     21K Turístico Riviera Nayarit de Jalisco
4.     21K Carrera del Día del Padre, Distrito Federal
5.     Maratón Ciudad de México, Distrito Federal
6.     Maratón Powerade de Monterrey
7.     Maratón Internacional de Tangamanga, San Luis Potosí
8.     21K  de Nuevo León
9.     Maratón Internacional de Culiacán
10.  Maratón  y 21k de Guadalajara
11.  Maratón de León Independencia
12.  Maratón de Aguascalientes

This meeting in Mexico City was organized by Martha Morales, runner, lawyer and organiser of the Tangamanga Marathon in San Luis Potosi/Mexico  – as well as a long-time member of the AIMS Board.

Ever since she joined the AIMS Board I have been encouraging her to motivate the South American event organisers to contribute some artefacts to the AIMS Marathon Museum of Running in Berlin.

Martha Morales is also responsible for the organisation of the AIMS children’s races that it sponsors to promote athletics for children in various countries.

She kept promising to send me race bibs from the events in her country – and it finally is happening. Everyone who participated in the meeting was asked to bring along items, materials and souvenirs from their races to be sent to Berlin and donated to the museum.

The organisers of the Mexican marathons and half marathon brought their t-shirts, medals, flyers, posters, and much more for the AIMS Marathon Museum of Running. The race bibs that were promised will be sent over, too, at some point.

According to Martha Morales, that was just the beginning. South America is huge with many large races that we unfortunately do not yet know much about.  We need to learn more about the South American races, and if not in person, than at least in our museum.

Her next goal is to organise a symposium for event organisers in Costa Rica. She writes that she has already notified them that they should bring along materials to donate to the AIMS Marathon Museum in Berlin.

We are delighted with the activities and collection organised by Martha Morales, which is a wonderful addition to the AIMS Marathon Museum of Running.

Thank you, Martha, and enjoy a long trip throughout all of South America in the name of AIMS.

Horst Milde
