AUCKLAND
Summer Series, Mt Smart Stadium – 9 November 2013

Dalton Coppins in his first up races of the season was in great form a month out from the national schools championships.

The 18 year old national U/17 100m record holder won the 100m in 10.67 (+2.3) and then later in the day demolished the 200m field in his second ever fastest time of 21.38 (+1.6).
“It is my second race into the season and that’s more than I can ask for,” said a delighted Coppins in reference to the 200m.

He has had a long winter of rehabilitation following a torn hamstring after the New Zealand championships in March.
“I had rehab and what-not throughout the winter and then a lot of strength and speed work and its paying off obviously.
“It will be my last schools champs and I want to make a statement, I guess I’ll be going for the 100m and the 200m where I’m hoping for a 21 second flat time,” he added.
Michael Goldie was second to Coppins in both races recording 10.93 and 21.78. Austen Heuvel was third in the 100m in the same time as Goldie.
Abby Goldie won the women’s sprint double in wind assisted times of 11.78 (+6.4) and 24.92 (+3.0). National heptathlon champion Portia Bing won the 400m in 56.15s from Lucy Jacobs 58.34 while former national youth champion Frazer Wickes won the senior 400m in 48.84s. Other 400m performances Henry Boyhan U/20 51.06 from William Cowper 51.15 and Michael Dawson U/18 52.39.
World junior hammer throw champion Alexandra Tavernier of France had the hammer out to 64.48m and Matthew Bloxham threw 71.80m with the 5kg hammer. Tavernier, who is in the country for three months, hopes to leave her name in the New Zealand record book by eclipsing the all comers record of 68.83m, possibly at the Lovelock Classic meeting in Timaru on 4 January. National champion Nicole Bradley recorded 53.70m. Anne Goulter set a New Zealand masters 50-54 age group hammer throw record of 42.76m.

WANGANUI
Central League, round 2, Cooks Gardens – 9 November 2013

Athletes enjoyed near perfect conditions with warm sunny conditions and a helpful legal tail wind on the home straight.

The male A grade 100m were not quite so fortunate encountering the only head wind of the day (1.5 metres / second) with Zac Topping (Manawatu) edging out William Smart (Wanganui) 11.12 and 11.13 respectively. It was the same order in the 200 metres with Topping running 21.60 to Smart’s personal best 21.83 both enjoying a favourable 1.0  m/sec tail wind while Scott Burch (Manawatu) made a welcome return to racing winning the 400m in 49.60.
Scott Thomson (Mana) was unfortunate find his only two recorded triple jumps were wind assisted. His final jump was 15.15m (+2.1). His sister Anna won the women’s with an 11.82m (+0.5) effort.
