Osako, Sato and Ugachi Lead Japanese Team for Nov. 23 International Chiba Ekiden – translated and edited by Brett Larner – Japan Running News
The Japanese team will be picked from an entry list of four men and four women. The men's list includes all three Japanese men from this summer's Moscow World Championships 10000 m, Suguru Osako (Waseda Univ.), Yuki Sato (Team Nissin Shokuhin) and Tsuyoshi Ugachi (Team Konica Minolta), as well as Moscow women's 5000 m runner Misaki Onishi (Team Sekisui Kagaku).
Combined with the likes of 2011-2013 National University Ekiden champion Komazawa University's star anchor Shinobu Kubota and women Miho Ihara (Team Sekisui Kagaku), Risa Kikuchi (Team Hitachi) and Sayuri Oka (Team Daihatsu), all stage winners in major fall ekidens, the Japanese national team will be looking to return to the victor's position for the first time in four years.
The Japanese University Select Team is also strong, led by 2013 World University Games 10000 m gold medalist Ayuko Suzuki (Nagoya University), 2013 National University Ekiden and 2013 Izumo Ekiden stage record-setter Kenta Murayama (Komazawa University) and Yuma Hattori (Toyo University), also a stage record-setter in Izumo.
Along with hosts Chiba Prefecture, nine foreign teams are set to run. Moscow World Championships women's 10000 m 4th-placer Emily Chebet tops the Kenyan team, while Moscow 1500 m 5th-placer Homiyu Tesfaye (Germany) is also a noteworthy name. Newly-crowned marathon national record holder Lanni Marchant leads a Canadian team that features London Olympians Reid Coolsaet, Alex Genest, Sheila Reid, Nicole Sifuentes and Dylan Wykes.
The 2013 International Chiba Ekiden will be broadcast live on Fuji TV starting at 1:00 p.m. Click here for details on watching online.
JRN will once again cover the race live on Twitter @JRNLive.
