RUNNING EUROPE – The Largest Marathon Races in Europe in 2013 – Dr. Roland Döhrn in the magazine “Laufmarkt” (updated on Dec. 31, 2013)
On December 13, 2013, we published Dr. Roland Döhrn’s statistical report, "The largest marathon races in Europe in 2013” in both English and German. This report received great resonance around the world among the specialists – even “Track and Field – The Bible” linked to our article, making it the most read article on the GRR website.
That also lead to a few corrections that have been integrated into the newest statistics—this also means a few changes in rankings, as some races fell back while other events with larger numbers of participants moved forward.
For the third year, Dr. Roland Döhrn has presented an overview of the largest marathon races in Europe – an overview that presents the developments in individual countries in clear numbers (finishers).
It is surprising to see that the Paris Marathon moved up – quietly and almost unnoticed – to the top in Europe, ahead of the Berlin Marathon and the long-time leader, the London Marathon.
With Berlin, Hamburg and Frankfurt, there are still three German races among the top ten listed events.
Paris had 38,690 finishers, a respectable lead ahead of Berlin with 36,474 and London with 34,312 finishers. Hamburg moved to 7th place with 11,450 finishers ahead of Amsterdam with 11,307 and Frankfurt with 11,011 finishers.
Four other German races are among the top fifty races: the Munich Marathon, Cologne Marathon, Düsseldorf Marathon and the Rennsteig Race.
Three countries each have seven races that ranked among the largest marathon races: France, Great Britain and Germany. Italy had 6 races, while Poland and Spain each had five races, Holland two races.
Switzerland—and all of the following countries—all have one race among the top 50: Sweden, Ireland, Denmark, Austria, Finland, Hungary, Portugal, Greece, Turkey, and the Czech Republic.
It is interesting to observe how some events fluctuated from one year to the next, both positively and negatively: Porto (POR) had a 64.9% increase in finsihers vis-à-vis the prior year, up to 2,755; Krakow (POL) increased by 46.7% up to 4,419; Chester (GBR) increased by 42.4 % up to 2,951, Seville (ESP) increased by 36.6 % up to 5,939 and the Athens Classic Marathon (GRE) increased by 31.2 % up to 8,490 finishers.
Some races, on the other hand, experienced drops in participation, for instance the Jungfrau Marathon (SUI), which went down by 39.5 % to 3,820 participants, partly due to their recent anniversary event.

Europe's Biggest Marathons
A new issue addressed on this site is a compilation of data on the biggest Marathon races in Europe. For this purpose, I set up a new data base, collecting information on the number of finishers at approximately 300 marathon events in Europe, which accounted in total for about 500.000 finishers in 2011. It is not the aim to list all marathon races, which would be extremely ambitious. But by covering the most important races in most countries, the data allow to draw a representative picture of development in Europe. The estimate is that more than 90% of all marathon participants in Europe a covered by the data base.
The subsequent tables show a ranking of the races according to size in 2011 and 2012, and a table providing the results for 2013. The latter table also contains information on the change in particpation.
