Nomi City, Japan – 16 March 2014 – India’s Gurmeet Singh won a bronze medal in the 9th edition of Asian 20 km Race Walking championships today in a season’s best 1 hour 21 minutes 30 seconds.  It was the third ever medal for Gurmeet in these championships.  Earlier he won a silver medal in 2012 and a bronze, last year.  Today’s time was almost 1 minute outside his personal best 1:20:35 clocked in Patiala three years ago.

Hyun-sub Kim posted a Korean national record 1:19:24 for the gold. However local star and defending champion Yusuke Suzuki finished only in a second place clocking 1:21:01.  Suzuki won last year’s race in a high quality 1:18:34 Asian record.  For the Korean it was his second title in Asian championships after 2011.

Khushbir Kaur surprised her compatriots in the women’s race as she was in the lead role in more than half of the distance.  However fatigue took its toll as she could manage only a third place at the end but her initial tempo helped to improve her own national mark to 1:33:37.  Her earlier best was 1:34:28, which she achieved when finished 38th in the World championships at Moscow last year.

China’s Zhou Tongmei (1:31:58) and Rei Inour of Japan (1:32:56) were the top two finishers in the women’s section.
Four other Indian race walkers competed in the Open category that was held concurrently with the championship races in Nomi.  Basant Bahadur Rana, the national record-holder in 50 km distance who finished fifth in 20 km with a time of 1:23:52 at the national open race walking championships in Kochi earlier this year, recorded an impressive personal best 1:21:29 at Nomi on Sunday morning.

Olympian K.T. Irfan (1:21:37 Season Best) and Devender Singh (1:21:49 Personal Best) were closely behind Rana while Krishnan Ganapathi finished in a slow time of 1:26:09 in the open category.

The Indian walkers will compete in the IAAF World Race Walking Cup at Taicang, China, later in May this year.
