Athletics Ireland – Relay Champs & World Half Preview

By GRR 0

The Woodie’s DIY Juvenile Indoor Track and Field Season comes to a conclusion this Saturday, March 29th in AIT International Arena, Athlone. The relay events are expected to attract almost 1,000 young athletes as they compete for their clubs in the various 4×100m and 4×200m relay events.

These championships invariably produce some excellent team performances and based on the high level of individual achievement so far this indoor season, more of the same can be expected on Saturday.

Entry List

The full list of Championship Best Performances (CBP) from day one and two of the juvenile championships can be viewed below:

Championship Best Performances 2014

The competition for the podium will as always be of the highest quality with teams having qualified through from their provincial competitions over the last number of weeks. At the 2013 Indoor Championships Leevale AC won three gold medals (U13B, U13G and U16B), the Cork club will once again be on the hunt for national titles in Athlone.

Galway City Harriers AC, Doneen AC, Kilkenny City Harrier AC and St Laurence O’Toole AC who all have excellent reputations when it comes to the relays are likely to challenge in what is set to be an exciting day of relay action. The competition begins with the girl’s and boy’s U13 4×100m relay at 10.30am.

Irish Duo Set for World Half Marathon Championships

Also on Saturday Paul Pollock (Annadale Striders AC) and Nicola Duncun (Galway City Harriers AC) will represent Ireland at the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Pollock qualified for the event after an impressive third place finish at the Bath Half Marathon on March 2nd. Pollock who is coached by Andy Hobnell finished behind two Kenyan athletes in Bath in a new personal best time of 63:52 to seal qualification for the championships. Pollock has good pedigree going into these championships after finishing 21st (2nd European) in the marathon at the IAAF World Championships in Moscow last August.

Duncun will join Pollock on the team as she makes her debut at World level. Duncan is a relative new comer to competitive running having only taken up the sport five years ago, her previous sporting background included playing tennis at inter-provincial level. Duncan who is coached by Nick Anderson has a busy couple of months coming up with April’s London Marathon next on the agenda after the Half Marathon Championships.
