Virgin London Marathon 2014 – ‘A record-breaking day,’ says Brasher

Hugh Brasher declared the 34th London Marathon “a record-breaking day” as the biggest ever crowds lined the streets to witness three new course records, a world record and, of course, Mo Farah’s much anticipated marathon debut.

In his second year as London Marathon race director, Brasher reflected on a glorious day in the capital: “The sun came out, the crowds were magnificent, and the elite athlete performances were truly stunning,” he said.

“We saw Wilson [Kipsang] set a magnificent course record, witnessed two men running under 2:05 for the first time, and Edna [Kiplagat] returning to London to win for the first time was a very special moment for us.

“I think the way she crossed the finish line, with her head in her hands rather than arms high in triumph, said a great deal about how much it meant to her to win in London.

“We also saw Spain’s Maria Paredes Rodriguez dip under three hours for the first time in the T11-13 women’s race at the IPC Athletics Marathon World Cup to smash her own world record – a great moment for anyone trying to run a sub-three hour marathon and a fantastic feat for her.”

“A total of 35,864 runners finished the race but unfortunately one of those runners tragically collapsed and died afterwards, so the day was tinged with sadness. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the runner’s friends and family.”

Brasher went on to acknowledge the amazing achievements of all the runners who raised money for good causes this year. As a result of their efforts, the 2014 Virgin Money London Marathon looks set to break its own Guinness World Record of £53 million for charity fundraising at a single annual event worldwide, set in 2013.

“Initial feedback from all the charities, as well as our online giving partner Virgin Money Giving, suggests that the average amount raised per runner is set to be even higher than last year,” said Brasher

“We estimate that a record 750,000 people supported the runners on London’s streets yesterday, boosted no doubt by the ‘Mo effect’ but also by the London 2012 Olympic legacy.

“I know the whole London Marathon team will work incredibly hard to ensure that the 2015 Virgin Money London Marathon is even better.

“We love saying we’re the world’s greatest marathon and we’ll continue to work hard to deliver the best possible experience to everyone involved with the race.”
