North Harbour Cross Country, Long Bay Regional Park – 29 June 2014
Tanzanian runner Misina Lameck took time out from his training to win the annual North Harbour 4000m cross country race yesterday.
The 19 year old who will compete alongside Nick Willis in the 1500m and 5000m at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games won comfortably in 12:07. Alex Parlane was second in 12:21 with Dan Hoy, who was second in last week’s national secondary schools championship in Palmerston North, third in 12:27. Hoy said that Lameck took it out real fast over the first kilometre and got away on the second lap.
“I ran with Alex Parlane and he just dropped me at the end.
“I head to Japan on 9 July for the world cup triathlon and then another block of training before the youth Olympics in China in August,” said Hoy.
In her first race this season Annie Keown won the women’s 4000m in 14:04 from previously unbeaten this season Rebecca Fogarty who ran 14:13 and Ashleigh Williams who clocked 14:17.
Keown, who is now coached by Paul Hamblyn said that she has been doing a lot of mileage.
“The base is there, a 4km was a bit of a shock but I wanted that so I decided just to go hard from the beginning.
“Every race I do from now is aiming towards the nationals in August, so I’ll just see how it goes and build up more from here,” said Keown.
Longer term she is aiming for the 10km on the track and maybe go out to half marathon.
Audrey Gregan won the junior 4000m in 14:34 and Penny Peskett led in the masters in 14:33. Chris Robb was the best of the masters in 13:47.
